Dear victor and alok,

i want to thank you both for putting together a wonderful trip. While all the informatiion is still fresh for me, i wanted to give you both some detailed feedback, nearly all positive, of course about our trip.first of all the hotels you booked were fascinating, and delightful.we loved kankarwa haveli in udaipur. i felt like naranjan, theowner/host, is a most remarkable man. our last night there, his
mother, brother, sister in law and two nieces were there, and he made an effort to introduce us all, particularly asking brian and me to show the niecesour india sketch books. he is a true gentleman and i think now a friendas well. he spoke about converting their family "castle" also into a
guest house, which i look forward very much to visiting. udaipur in total seduced me fully. food at kankarwa is very very good vegetarian home cooking, and i would recommend it to any of your guests. Usually we were the only ones eating dinner on their roof top dining area overlooking the lake.

fort rajwada in jaisalmer was amazing. at first i thought it was a little too big and didnt have the character of the older places. But the staff was so pleasant and enthusiastic, particularly the "boy" who watched out for our wing. and thank you very much, alok, for introducing us to Jitendra Rathore. i liked him very much. we met, then that evening sat with him after his dinner, then the next night had drinks and appetizers with him at the bar of the hotel.  i suggested that he
visit new york with you, alok. if so, please feel free to call on me. perhaps we can visit a beautiful place in new york, like the Brooklyn botanical gardens together.  after the staff had seen us with jitendra, we suddenly became minor VIPs and i was addressed in the dining room as
"Maharaja". so thanks for that.  i also heard a group of qwallis singing to the stars in one of the courtyards of the hotel. they were hired to play for a group of germans, who soon after the group started playing and dancing, went for dinner. leaving me alone with the musians. knowing that in jaisalmer, the qwallis also play bhajans, i requested a mira bhajan, which they performed, beaming the energy right to me.  Then they played a sufi song. only for me. it was divine.

bikaner house was a marvelous stage set. a complete contrast to the other places we visited. i loved those big, dark cool rooms.  it was rather empty at that time of year, and felt like the scene of a
strange gothic novel. we were given an entire suite, so thank you for that. the food there was extremely good, i thought. i really loved the jain temples, and we hiked up to a devi temple in a cave on the hillside there. mt abu is very tacky, but that was a real note of class. Food there was excellent, one of the best dinners we had.

i also liked ratan vilas at jodhpur. it was simpler than the other heritage hotels, and as you know the neighborhood is a little strange.but once inside it was spotless, and very nice. our room was extremely comfortable. and the maharaja himself made an appearance, which was stellar. the food there was also very good. i loved arya nivas in jaipur, but i can imagine it is not everyone's
cup of chai. it is an old victorian hotel, now a guest house. very simple services. but the dining room was fine, the garden and rooftop both very nice places to spend a little quiet time. and it is spotlessly clean.

it is in the muslim neighborhood, so i woke up hearing the call to prayer all around me. and the cast of characters staying at that hotel is fabulous. old stern british matrons there to assist poor country
children, writers assembling for the jaipur literary festival, the odd hippy traveller, some german intellectuals. it all felt like an agatha christie mystery.

i would not recommend hotel ritz. the location is great. it is an old art deco hotel, waiting to be brought back to life. but unfortunately it was not clean, particularly a pumpkin orange wall to wall carpet in our room that i tried to avoid. there was a lovely balcony but it has not been swept in weeks if not longer, so it was not pleasant to use. i know that mumbai was a problem in our budget range, but this one was not "it". howard plaza in agra was okay, but a little generic. i felt like i was in miami beach. perhaps for another set of guests there is a hotel there with a little more character. agra seems a little problematic to me as it is so tourist driven. but it was wonderful to be in the taj mahal (particularly a small museum in one of the side buildings) and the fort, which interested me more. i really want to commend our driver in rajasthan, bhagwat singh. He is a true prince. his english is a little limited, but his heart is great. He would listen to our conversations and make suggestions of things we might like to do, see, eat. he did NOT insist on taking us to every
kashmiri shawl store in sight, was very considerate and kind. and knowledgable particularly about places to stop on the road, and restaurants that other tourists have enjoyed. we were very sorry to
say good by to him, and i think he will miss us too. for us, being with him was very good chemistry. i would recommend him highly . we had some extraordinary food. some ordinary food. the distances on the road were somehow a bit longer than i expected them to be. but we broke them up with rest/chai/lunch stops here and there. shoppig was spectacular. i enjoyed buying things for my family and friends, and my purchases have been very much appreciated. victor, i will call you early next week about making a day to come see you in person. i just wanted to sum all this up for myself and for you both for feed back. thank you both again for taking on this budget trip and making it so memorable for both of us. i would certainly recommend ivat to any friends interested in making a similar trip come to life.

sincerely
robert

Dear Victor,

Well, it was just amazing. Robert and I expected our India adventure to be one of our greatest trips ever, and it more than matched up. My personal goals in touring India were to see enough of the daily life, visit enough historic sites, and talk to enough people about their situations and opinions that I would come home with a broader understanding of one of the great civilizations on earth. Thanks to your masterful planning and to the expertise of the various good people who took such tender care of us, all of those goals were met. With the bonus that, in the process, India managed to lodge firmly and deeply in my heart.

There were many surprises, of course, none more delightful than your charming appearance at the cathedral in Delhi. Thank you for taking the effort to give us such a personal sendoff.

I assume that an IVAT questionnaire will be arriving soon. While we're happy to give feedback, be prepared that we probably will not rank our guides, who were uniformly well-informed and accommodating. We would feel that we were betraying the trusting relationship we shared with these hard-working people if we rated any of them less than magnificent. Of course we had our favorites, and we rewarded them appropriately.

On that subject, we found that the issue of tipping was often puzzling. We probably over-tipped some, undertipped others, but--using your guidelines--we did our best. The one gray area was what to do about IVAT's local agents. Your tipping sheet seemed to advise us not to tip those who just met us at the airport but there were several people who accompanied us to hotels and back to airports, which sometimes took up to an hour. Only towards the end of the trip did we start giving those people something for their service. The most puzzling situation, which I continue to worry about, was with Alok, in Jaipur. Alok spent quite a bit of time and trouble doing battle with UPS on our behalf when we sent suitcases home, and accompanied me to their office. (He even loaned me money to make the cash-only transaction.) Also, he was my companion for a long (if delightful) evening at the cooking lesson. Because he is an IVAT vice president, it felt inappropriate to tip him, yet now I wonder if he felt "stiffed." I would appreciate your insight on this matter and, if you feel a tip would have been appropriate, your advice on how to accomplish doing something at this stage.

That would be our only question for you. Isn't it remarkable that such a complicated itinerary involving many challenging situations would produce such a glorious and trouble-free trip? Thanks to you, that's what we enjoyed. Please feel free to use us as references for IVAT (and for Victor Biswas!).

We dearly hope to see you in San Francisco one day. Please do contact us if you're coming west.

With warm regards,
Suzanne Redfern-West
